Today, India is home to 1.3 billion people, and disposal of waste has become a major issue in the urban areas. Hon’ble Prime Minister of India launched the 'Swacch Bharat Mission' on 2nd October 2014 with the vision of a Clean India.
The Ministry supports a “Programme on Energy from Urban, Industrial and Agricultural Waste/Residues” aimed at the generation of biogas, Bio CNG and Power from different wastes, such as municipal solid wastes, vegetable and other market wastes, slaughterhouse waste, agricultural residues and industrial wastes & effluents.
As of 31st July 2018, 181 Waste to Energy projects with a total installed capacity of 310.45 MWeq (including 249.74MW of Power generation plants) have been installed in the country.
India seeks collaboration and cooperation from various research & development institutions, leading technology providers, financial institutions, and other companies in the sector for the development of the Waste to Energy sector.
